Position Description
The BUGS (Baltimore Urban Gardening with Students) After-School Program focuses on academic support, social skills development, and project-based learning in specialized areas: Gardening and the Environment, Creative Arts, Cooking and Nutrition, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Job Summary:
We are currently seeking a self-motivated, creative and flexible person to fill the part-time Gardening and Environment Instructor position. Applicants must have a college degree, experience working with urban youth, appreciate gardening and nature, love working with kids, being willing to partner with other educators to create lesson plans, and possess considerable classroom management skills. Normal work days/hours are Monday through Thursday 1:00 – 7:00 p.m.

Responsibilities and Administrative duties:
o Daily care and maintenance of program growing facilities and plant stock including greenhouse, vegetable, perennial and herb gardens, and compost bins.
o Managing the plant and care of all Farmer's Market plants and produce.
o Collaborating with the Cooking and Nutrition Educator to grow produce that will be used during the Cooking Component.
o Coordinate summer farmer’s market and community gardening initiatives.
o Daily care and maintenance of the BUGS Chicken Coop
o Collaborating with the Cooking and Nutrition Educator to grow produce that will be used during the Cooking Component
o Coordinating and sustaining the partnership with Waterfront Kitchen Greenhouse Manager
o Collaborate with the Cooking and Nutrition Educator for attending, selling and producing items to sell at Summer Farmer’s Markets
o To assist in the coordination of all events and activities including: the BUGS Expo, Parent Events, and Farmer’s Market.
o Management and development of the BUGS Blog.
Position Requirements
Instructor duties:
o Work with Program Manager to create engaging and meaningful lesson plans for each two-week session that provide opportunities for skill mastery and social and academic enrichment and follow the approved lesson plan format.
o To provide good classroom management by holding student accountable for their behavior and consistent and creative usage of positive behavior management techniques including BUG BUCKS system.
o To assist the program and its participant in meeting all program goals including academic and social skills improvement, attendance, and family partnership.
o Coordinate Daily Recreation Activities; plan activities, purchase and managing recreation equipment and setting up recreation equipment daily.
o To provide teacher and student assistance in the classroom at Commodore John Rodgers Elementary school a minimum of one morning per week.
o To create and maintain a positive, child-friendly classroom environment for students that is clean, supplies are accessible, and is conducive to hands-on learning.
o To purchase supplies within monthly component budget and maintain monthly expense log.
o To transport students home daily on the van and or BUGS Bus and clean out vehicles on a regular basis.
o To effectively lead a group of twelve students through the program day including; snack, recreation, bathroom, tutoring, homework assistance and component
o To obtain a CDL license to drive the BUGS Bus and safely transport students to and from the program in 15 passenger vans
o To participate in an overnight camping experience at Camp Puh’tok in Monkton, MD.
o To participate in Saturday programming such as the Annual BUGS Farmer’s Market.
o To maintain daily attendance
o To communicate with parents on a regular basis regarding student achievement, behavior, program activities and upcoming events.
o Such other duties deemed necessary.
